Dug the garden bed for this summer with a rototiller. Virgin ground on a hill beside the house. After I tilled the kids and me dug with out hands in the fresh dirt and found lots of stuff. Two horse shoes, plenty of porcelain and glass, some pottery shards.
Found some modern change nothing special. We also found a worn out 1903 V nickel. One steel penny, a big 1881 dollar and a Buffalo nickel.(daughter found those) I am soaking the coins in oil now, pictures to come. They are very black, is that normal? One penny is green the other one is crusty and black, the steel one looks really good. The Buffalo nickel looks almost brown. Why the variation is appearances? I figured they would all look the same.

I REALLY need a detector.

Next paycheck might go toward a beginner set up. REALLY beginner since I am broke as a joke.
Like Radio Shack or something for the daughter to use. Her luck is better than mine.

Wow GL you found coins by hand that detectorist have never found (yet), people hunt for years and years and never find a morgan dollar.

Where are you located?

South Central NC.

Thing is I'd use a detector if I had one. There is an endless supply of old abandoned houses around here and I know of at least one 1800s schoolhouse in the woods not too far away. Kids lose money, it's what they do. Keep in mind Sherman marched his war party right through my county and there are places here that date back to the 18th century. Plenty of places to look I would think.
I would enjoy searching at parks and stuff if I could. I'm learning a lot just being here reading and looking and admiring all the neat coins and stuff you guys are finding. I'll be definitely making a screen box for the buggy house at least. I have plenty of time for buying a detector after my bills are paid up(I have pending dental work to pay for). After that I will definitely be buying something. Until then I'll just read and post what I do find.
The kids found more porcelain shards today.

Get a garret Ace 250, 200 bucks, or a bounty hunter tracker IV about 100 bucks. I wouldent go cheaper than that.

Ace 250 seems to get a lot of respect here.

I was going to post a map to that schoolhouse but it's on an unmarked dirt road in Scotland County.
I would LOVE to go and check it out. I have to go to Laurinburg tomorrow for work, I'll stop and take some pictures for you all. It looks perfect for hunting. Single room schoolhouses are bound to be rare.

There are also plenty of ancient cabins and decrepit homesteads nearby.

Great finds....
Do not clean your coins...
They will be worth less money to the collector... :icon_king:

Wow. There is certainly a flurry of help for you on this post! Welcome!

Don't be too hasty to post a photo of your schoolhouse site. Make sure you keep it under your hat until you're the one who swings a detector over it the first time.

I look forward to seeing more posts from you, and welcome to Tnet!

I agree with BB keep that site to yourself...You'll be the one posting those finds...Not someone else...HH

Your eyes will serve as the perfect tool until you decide which Metal Detector you're going to go with. The box screen works and is easy to make, plus it gets the kids involved...

Hey GL you can get a good deal on a detector at kelleyco.com, got mine there and highly recommend them. You can be sure there is more in your soil than just good garden dirt, my dad and me found all sorts of coins when I was growing up in Kansas in our family garden.

GL... Word of advice... DON'T CLEAN THOSE COINS MAN!! You'll be taking all the history off of them and you risk damaging them. If you intend to sell coins or relics, most collectors like them in "as found" condition or would prefer to clean them on their own. If you are going to keep what you found, then it is obviously whatever you prefer. Cool finds! Keep 'em coming!! Phips

Well since the dollar belongs to my daughter and she wanted to show and tell it, I was asked repeated by her to "make it shiny". I did clean it and it looks like a mirror in the sun. The V nickel is also nice and gleaming.

She's spending the night at my ex wifes apartment so when she comes home tomorrow this is what she will be greeted with:

You have a very productive site right in your own back yard. Most folks look for years for a site like yours. Congratulations on some great finds.

More to come, when you get a detector.

Welcoem to TNet.
