Measures 1.02 inch in length and 0.22 inch at fattest width. Definitely some writing on one side in a curved line. Pretty tiny...anyone know anything? Thanks

Looks like the keyhole cover from a padlock and the writing might be the patent or maker's mark. If you can get it legible with some light cleaning you might be able to get an approximate date too. There are ton if different varieties, but here's the picture of one still attached to the padlock that was posted here on treasurenet some time back.

Maybe try flour to see if letters become legible?

What metal is it? Kinda looks like inlay from an old gun stock trigger guard or side plate.

Ben, I thought you'd want to know... the photo you posted, from etsy, is actually a trunk-lock, not a door-lock. I wondered why a door-lock would have a keyhole cover, so I went to etsy and checked. The photo below shows the back of the lock in the frontview photo from etsy.

My guess on the writing is PATENT as it is the most common word found on these, but company names also appear sometimes.

Agree with SPATS. Probably going to be Patent.
