Metal Detector Fred went to a party and drank some of the punch and then left.

Everyone else at the party who drank the punch a few hours after Metal Detector Fred left died of poisoning.

Why didn't Metal Detector Fred die?

2. The punch spoiled sitting out over the next hours

The poison in the punch came from the ice cubes. So the more the ice melted the more toxic the punch became

i like both answers: He poisoned the punch AFTER he drank it OR the ice cubes were 'spiked' and he drank before they melted.

The poison was in the ice cubes and they had not quite melted yet when John drank the punch.
