Today's Find at local base

Well, I was given permission to detect one of the local bases and below is what I found today.

I did not find what I was hoping, since it was my first time detecting in this area...I kept trying different spots to see what hits I would get. This place certainly requires more thorough detecting...for sure!!!! Hubby and I may hit it again either Monday or Tuesday. I'll make him go into the wooded area. Yes, I was chicken...don't know what crawly critters are in there :) and he's not afraid of snakes. I scream seeing a baby garden snake in my yard, but I will pick up a spider and put him back outside...go figure!!! (Well, actually, I let the spider hitch a ride on my straw broom and shake it off when I get outside LOL)

I had so many people coming up to me asking me if I found anything. Of course, I tell them about all the other neat things I have found :). So many kids coming up ... "I want to do that" - "Can I try it?" - "I'm a good digger, can I dig?" - "I think you should let me try it." (<<<really, they did say that!!). Early in the morning, I did let one kid try it out and he found a bullet. His grandma said, "Well, I know what I will be getting him for Christmas." (a detector, not a gun!!) ...He loved it. I did let him help me this morning, then all the kids started coming!!!!!!! I tried to hide LOL. The two kids I want to do it, won't (my kids)...but I get everyone else's!!! Oh Well. When we were getting ready to leave, some adults walked by and said, "She finding a gold nugget." I said, "If I found a gold nugget, I would not be sitting here digging in the dirt." LOL

I found a bunch of bullets, it appears there are atleast 3 different kinds. Looks like some exploded or hit their target. This area I was in early in the morning, must have been at one time...a possible firing range of sort. Will have to check with the base Public Affairs Office...see if they can tell me anything and the time frame. I was stationed on this base and know some of the history, but this is new to me!! Loving it!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for letting me share!!!
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS AND GOD BLESS AMERICA. Keep our MEN and WOMEN in your Hearts and Prayers!!!

Button cover?????? The inside blue/turquoise color thing looks like a colored plastic tile. No markings that I can see.

And of course, I can't forget my pulltab in the root :)

Re: Today's Find at local base

That is a nice haul of bullets. I sort of like to dig old bullets, and my jaw just about fell off when I scrolled down and saw all you found! Looks like some 45 ACP slugs there among other things, which makes sense since that was the military's sidearm for so long.

Maybe other coins will come up for you next time, but at least you found some wheaties! It is never a total loss on the coin front when you find those.

Doh! I just saw on your sig you're USN retired so you were in the era of the 45 auto. Call me master of the obvious. Oh well, a lot of younger folks on the forum won't recognize the good ol' 45 Ball.

Re: Today's Find at local base

Here's a close up of atleast 3, possibly 4 diff types of bullets I dug up. I think the two on the far right are the same type...but the second from the right is more silver in color, whereas the one on the far right is more of a bronze color. The one on the far left, marked RA 61...is the only one of those I found.

Looks like .38/.357 bullets on the right, one of them being copper jacketed, the other being a lead bullet for target practice. In the Korean War they learned that the 357 magnum would go through the body armor worn by some of the communist troops. I believe the rounds they carried for that use were the jacketed "ball" type because it was either the Hague or the Geneva convention where they established that expanding bullets can't be used in battle.

I think R A is Redstone Arsenal?

Re: Today's Find at local base

Thank you Rusted_Iron....I have no idea from one bullet to the next!! Tried researching the RA61...but didn't really find anything.

I will have to do some research of the area. I am very curious. Hopefully I will also be able to find more than just bullets next visit :)

Thanks again!!!!
HH...Happy Fourth
