Today's Finds 5-25-2025

Had my Deus 2 out for the first time after updating to version 3.0. I don't know if it's coincidence or something was done for the better, but it seems to go deeper. It also has even better ability to sort through iron trash. I haven't made any changes to the settings after the update besides sensitivity. Just used Sensi FT at 96 sensitivity. I haven't added my custom programs yet since the update. So today I went to a holiday picnic at one of my permissions. So, I decided to hit my other permission next door for an hour or so. I have never found anything at this particular permission older than early 1900's. I've worked this same area of the permission many times over the last couple years.

Well, to my surprise, my first hit was small flat cuff button (1830's - 1840's?). Next hit was a 1972 Memorial. Next a part of a bell. The final target, another flat button with what looks to be an "Alpha" shank! Crap, did I just get back into the late 1700's at a permission I was lucky to find anything older than 1974?

The cuff button looks to have a back mark of "IMPERIAL STANDARD". I can read standard for sure. The other part is sketchy, but it looks to start with "I" and end with "AL" which is good enough for me at this point. I found this post from Cannonballguy from 2019.

Your find is what collectors of Historical Buttons call a brass 1-piece "flatbutton." It was made from "rolled" brass (meaning, the brass was flattened in a press), instead of being cast in a mold. That type dates from the mid-1700s and almost entirely dies out around 1840. Brass 1-piece flatbuttons with a backmark written in raised lettering date from about 1790 into the 1830s... and indented lettering (seen in your button's backmark) started about 1810. The presence of the word "Imperial" in your backmark means it was manufactured in Britain... like the majority of flatbuttons dug in the...

Slow. It's heavy. I only swing it for half hour at a time. Most things scanned look like discs, even nails. I may need to do a test garden of identified items and set the machine to learn by scanning known objects.
