Got out a bit today early in morning. I beat the heat but not the bugs. Recovered a few coins. Three of them are half cents but I cant get any dates off them. The two large cents are from a hunt a week or two ago. I was disappointed when I dug the bell and found that it was broken. I scanned the area but could not find the other pieces. A plow probably struck it. Can anyone identify the time period for the tap and spoons. The spoons are very heavy. Thanks and happy hunting. The buckle is the third I found from the same site.

No CW today. I haven't dug at any of my CW spots since the fields have been planted. I am looking forward to fall since I got a new spot. Hoping we get some rain to soften the ground soon.

I hear ya RR3.....field's all planted in Sharpsburg and everywhere else.We need some serious rain

RR3,
I would love to have a great day like you had finding that many old coins.
Way to go,
MM

We must be practically neighbors. I'm only a few miles from Sharpsburg myself. I don't like ya wishing for rain... the rivers just getting diggable :laughing7:

Great finds RR3.... To be able to do that in this weather is amazing :notworthy:

BTW... I believe the spoons will date to at least the 1700's.

Yea I dont like when the river gets up either. I live about 3 blocks from the Potomac thats how I thought of my tnet name "Riverrat3". I was lucky today to dig in some spots that always seem moist. Had some great targets but didn't dig them because the ground was so hard.

I live up against the C&O Canal myself. Just about 60 feet higher than the river. Love watching the floods from the cliffs...sorry ::)

Nice haul!!! :headbang: :notworthy: If I were you I would put those coppers in a hot hydro bath and then hit em with some Vaseline. You'll get more detail and I'm betting a date or two!

I have never had much luck with hydrogen peroxide. I feel like I have lost detail on the coin unless I am doing something wrong. How long should I soak it for?

I think I found the other half.. Lol. HH. Bryan H.

It can be hit or miss with hydro but for the most part I've had good results and here's what I do...Pour about 3/4 of a cup of hydro in a sturdy zip-lock sandwich bag. Seal the bag and microwave it until the bag starts to expand and then remove. Carefully open the bag as steam/vapors may come out (do not inhale vapors) and drop one coin in for 30 to 60 min(watch for patina flaking...BAD!). Take the coin out and gently rub to see if the dirt comes off easily or not. If not, reheat the hydro and drop the coin back in checking periodically. If there's stubborn dirt you may have to repeat whole process, especially if the hydro gets very cloudy.
Then if all goes well the majority of dirt will come off easy and rubbing carefully with Vaseline should remove the rest and bring out whatever detail is left. Good luck and let us know what the dates are  Hope it goes well!

I will give it a try one evening this week and let you know how it goes. I may try it first on a really toasted large cent. I have had luck with olive oil in the past.

Great, just bear in mind the peroxide is more for stubborn dirt than corrosion however I can tell you that I used this treatment on my Liard (which was toasted) and it worked well for what it was. Just watch out if you pull a coin and it starts deteriorating (patina flaking)immediately, I would do an olive oil(non virgin) soak for two weeks and check after the first week.

Nice hunt and finds RR! HH, Mike
