Its nice when the larger ones come out, normally indicating an early site, also means it hasn't been done well by anyone else.

If you stick at this area & grid it well you should get a Silver soon...

This site is hunted to death litterally thousands of times
because there was a roman village there
I hope you are right for the silver:tongue3:

Well they did a bad job of it, leaving a coin that size, so you do have a chance for a silver.

Hey ivobg!! CONGRATS on your recent finds!! Neat Coin!! It must be Really Interesting to be able to Dig in areas that old with the History to support it and Know you could hit the Find of a Lifetime!! GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Thanks VERDE
Good luck to you too!:icon_thumleft:

Nice coin :icon_thumleft: a bit of work with a fibre pen might reveal more detail, it looks like there is a lot of build up on top of the coin.

Looks like the size of a brass sestertius.
CRU, what is it's ID?
Maybe something like this:

Dads sorted it:

Copper AS of AD22-30 issued by Tiberius in honour of Augustus. The legends are as follows:

Obv: DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER with Augustus radiate bust LEFT (this is classed common) – a radiate head RIGHT is rare
Rev: S – C to left and right of Altar enclosure with double panelled door with ornaments on top. PROVIDENT is in exergue.

The type found is therefore a RIC vol I no 81 Rome mint. Sears 1789 which in 2000 valued at F $104 VF $240 EF $600.

The rare type is the RIC vol I no 80 shown with text on wildwinds sold at $50 in 1980.

like the coin! gz!

It would be interesting to know the diameter and weight if possible, as almost all bronze coins issued before the late third century AD bore the letters SC on the reverse...:icon_thumright:

Don..

your pictures Obverse does match the coin of the OP, if the weight and diameter also match (close to) that would match the weight and diameter of a AS and also close to a Dupondius. All three of the below coins have the same Obverse and Reverse.

AS.............9-12g-27mm.

Dupondius.11-15g-29mm.

Sestertius..20-30g-35mm.

Good that confirms was Dad states below:

Just a note on IVOBG’s Augustus AS – Although it is not immediately obvious I can clearly make out the PRO[VIDENT] (in the exergue) and the right side temple pillar on the REV. Mackaydon’s example he pictured is spot one – that one he pictured sold as an AS at 30mm and just over 10gms – as per the dimensions just given by Ivobg.– furthermore, there are no Sestertius or Dupondius of that PROVIDENT type recorded to date. So ident as RIC Vol 1 Rome 81 AS complete.

Not really 100% as it's still with in the parameters of the Dupondius, as per picture below. This one being slightly under weight at 9.50g, and 27mm which just goes to show how weight, and flans can vary.
