ForumRunner_20120811_095642.webp I don't know if you spent much time researching the pottery you have found but I find it to be the next best way of dating a site with out having projectile points. Based on the temper.. fiber or sand and the style. those particular pieces are saint johns check stammped

pottery style/method "best way of dating a site without projectile points"...even with! Right on!

Thanks tom. I agree. I guess it depends on what you're looking for a little as well. Some of that research is a little labor intensive. if you're not looking to put a story together about the people and projectile points are the main goal it could become quite boring.

I find alot of both sand and fiber temper shards also some with what looks like it was wraped with some sort of woven basket still atached it was found in a soft clay filled hole after a man made lake here was drained . can you or any one else help with some net sights for research . i have found some info for my area not much south central al. (covington co. and crenshaw co.) i`m trying to figure out a time line at a site that i hunt at alot, the mixture of artifacts at the sight is very confuseing it ranges from late paleo type stuff to arch, woodland to missi the deeper i go the older it gets , it is on a gently slopeing hill with large open flat areas as it goes down hill at the top are mostly larger artifacts such as large chunks of tallahatta and chert large spawls large blades ect. then on the next flat open area 40ish yards down the hill point`s scrapers good size flakes at the bottom shards alot of shards and small chips i`m thinking the larger stuff stayed on top and the smaller washed down over time, hurricanes tropical storms ect. just a theory, and just 50,60 yards away paleo at about six to eight feet down in a fire lane that washed out on the same hill side . some of the material i find is not from this area,at least as far as i can tell

Without in depth knowlage of your area I can only be of so much help. I can tell you that the pottery would be from no eirlier than the late archaic and fiber is older than sand. I would bet that your states museum of natural history website would be a lot of help. Also your site sounds a lot like Payne's prarrie in my state. Also it sounds like you just gave me a timeline. Paleo had at least some occupation maybey seasonal ..archaic into woodland became more sedentary..ect...ect. good ground is good ground. Your site sounds great

Cool pattern on the pottery!

Yeah I like the check stamp. There is so many differt kinds here in my area. It actually tells a really good story about the trade network between tribes. Personally I don't think pottery was often the trade item..just the transport vessel. So they got spread around with the goods.
