After a much too long winter, I finally went to an old local park/ swimming hole. The first thing I see is where some detectorist has done a lot of digging but with little or no effort to cover up. This was in Hampden, Maine. I don't know if the culprit is a member here but if they are, they need to smarten up before they ruin things for all of us. The good thing was they missed a lot of targets, pennies, dime and quarter and a nice little silver ring. The ring was about 2 feet from one of the "badger diggins". I'm still using my ancient Bounty Hunter 280 outlaw but found the coins and ring all 4-8" deep. I'm only going on my second season of detecting but I feel pretty good that any plug I dug today would be damn hard to find again. I even tried to fix up a few of the other persons holes but did'nt feel like wasting all my detecting time. I also filled my pouch with a lot of junk and a few old bullets and casings. I did'nt get a pic as when I got home my daughter in law appropriated the ring and you've all seen plenty of common coins. I hope silver on first outing is a sign of good diggin to come. If the "badger" is reading this , you know who you are, just PLEASE do a better job filling your holes!

Well its a shame but thats been getting more common then folks think. Had the same deal here where i detect an saw what i would call CRATERS about a foot deep where some fool used a shovel in a city park. ARRGGGHHH !!!!!

I hear what your saying dumpdigger! :notworthy:
I catch heck all the time by city parks employees for somebody else's dirty work! >:(
I take great pride in leaving a site as good or better then it was when I got there!

It would be nice if someone caught these morons in the act of destruction so they can be banned. Otherwise we will all be banned if they keep it up...Like you said, you can hardly tell where most of us dig a target when were done.

Probably some idiot with a $39 Walmart Dirtdigger 1000 Junior model. At least you know you can follow him and the good stuff is still there and the crap is on top of the ground. Just get in front of him and set some snares. Are leg hold (read that: bear) traps still legal in Maine???? He would miss it with the DD1000Jr and step in it.

We have had the same problem here in London Ont. These hunters are buying the detectors and just digging where they please. Our club educates any one that joins our club on how to dig the proper horse shoe, with flipping back the grass and using your plastic drop sheet to leave no trace at all. Our club is the only one here in London, there are many people that have belonged to clubs over the years that decide not to participate in any club. I would say that these people are not the problem, just the new people learning this hobby. If I see any one detecting I go over and see what they are up to, this will make for some good conversations or it will lead to me stepping on their coil. Our club has been in contact with the city, just to mention that all our members are very aware of the digging practice required to detect in any park in this city. We have over twenty parks and we look after how we do our hunting. I think if you find anyone wrecking the grass, just give them Little pep talk. :help:
