That's a shingling hatchet, used to split cedar shingles and tap in the nails.

Any idea of its age? House was built 1890s then there was a old bungalow colony there

They are still made today, If you cleaned it up, maybe there might be some distinguishing marks that could pin it down to a maker, then it might be able to be dated.

What are you going to soak it in to remove that?

I reccomend electrolysis over muratic acid for that dark antique look.

I haven't set up a electrolysis yet I'm lucky enough to be able to figure out how to use the detector I'm by far no brain surgeon ! Lol I usually soak it in vinagar then use a brush I'm working on the electrolysis
