I have a site that I have been worried that there may be burials on it, so I took a friend of mine that is an Archaeologist to take a look at it. The reason that I thought that it had burials was the amount of pottery in a 50' by 50' area, the pottery is almost like gravel it is so thick. It was a great day, it always helps to have a set of new eyes to look at a spot. We found just tons of broken pottery and he is going to give me a date Sunday from that, we also found 1 broken Bayou Goulla bird point, a small drill, a very well used hammer stone, a napping stone, a crude stem point, but what told him what we were looking at was the 100's of animal bones. We found bird, turtle, shell fish and fish bone, I had found fish bones before but did not put 2and2 together. What my site is , is a small midden mound that has been spread out by farming. It was great to sit down and go thur all this stuff to come up with a ID of what I was seeing . Some of the animal bones were so small you had to look super close at them because they looked like super small twigs of straw or grass. There is so much broken pottery it would fill up the back of a pickup truck and you would still need something to haul the rest. 002.webp001.webp

Good for you in doing the right thing by your site. Guess you hit a pottery motherlode. Middens are good for preserving bone tools as well as pottery. Good luck hunting there.

You had a productive day. Thanks for sharing.

very cool! did archaeology bring you two together or were you friends before?

We were friends from back in our outlaw days:laughing7:

UP DATE: The site is dated to 1200 to 1400 A.D. early Mississippian during the Emerald phase and after the Troyville phase.

Most burials from that era are in the middens. Here they are shell middens sometimes 10 feet deep. We do not dig middens for that very reason. At least I don't Sounds like you had a good learning day. Fun

Emerald Phase and Troyville phase apply to your area right. I ask because here we have time frames such as Dallas and so forth but it is area specific. Is that right Monsterrack? I do not mean to sound dumb,Lol

TN.. That cultural period by me would be considered Malabar 2.. A & B.

Yes you are right I should have made that clear(duh) Emerald and Troyville are mound complexes that are near by. Emerald is in Natchez Ms. and Troyville is in Jonesville La.
