Hello all,

I was visiting my wife's family in Kimble County, Texas the past few days. There is a camp site where some nice points, tools, pottery pieces, and a lot of evidence of knapping and fire are plentiful. This "arrowhead" was dug from the same site and would like to get some 'expert' opinion on it. The Mason topaz area is probably less than 20 miles away and there seem to be at least two other known topaz specimens. I wanted to share this with the group but also get a little more information if anyone can help. We are not certain that this is topaz but it does appear different than quartz and I HIGHLY doubt it is glass based on where it came from. It does have quite a significant flaw/crack but is completely intact otherwise.

Thanks,
Jason

I have never seen a point made from that material or with that style of basal flaking.

I am not at all any kind of expert on these things, but, I can tell you that topaz does in fact fracture concoially, but if someone did in fact use topaz to make a point, he must have had incredibly strong hands! Topaz is really hard! Harder than quartz and I've heard that quartz is really hard to work! If that turns out to be topaz, In my book that makes it an even cooler point!!!:headbang:

I like it. Not a point guy.

I realize it would probably not have been a functional point but more than likely a pendant or some type of trade item. Some of the points and tools from this site are amazing.

It's a pretty piece. It is still probably quartz. Topaz has the nasty habit of fracturing along cleavage planes, so wouldn't last through the flint knapping process.
