Kinda looks like some kind of toggle for lacing, like on a hiking boot. Keep searching that area and you might find other items to figure the puzzle.

I have some exactly like that... suspender deal... the suspender went through the elongated section and the other part had a leather strap that buttoned on both ends to the trousers...

IMHO

I made a pic to help illustrate... and I could be wrong but I think this is right...

That was quick guys! I think you got it. Nice Illustration. I never in a million years would have guessed that one. Very interesting. It makes sense also being that there are two of them and that they were close. I wonder if maybe there was cloth or a lace attached to them that rotted away over the years.

Could be, or they were just loose or discarded... I have three of them I think, not found together, and one or more are made of German Silver... I think you got a great find with a matching pair! Late 1800s I think.

Ah yes, before clamps were incorporated onto the ends of suspenders, there were button holes. Buttons were placed on the waistband of trousers so the button holes could be afixed, and the suspenders were then used to hold up pants. Ingenious, don't you think? I believe this was most commonly used on wool trousers since clamping things onto their waistbands could have ruined the material. Nice finds!
