Sounds a lot like the hope slide , not sure when that happened 1950ish I guess. , buried workers, cars and half the hwy. the people and still there , never recovered the bodies. To much rock . So there is just a plaque on the side of the hwy .

That's the Frank Slide. I just drove by the site on Tuesday. The mountain was never very stable to begin with, and with all the mine shafts....one the side of the mountain just crumbled. It's now just an expanse of huge boulders.
