So I just got back from a holiday in Maui for a week.
I really wanted to go panning there but the rain-forest side with all the creeks was raining and flooding so it was too dangerous to pan.
Much to my dismay or as much as one can be dismayed while in paradise i wasnt gonna discover any gold on Maui.
The south side of the Island was sunny and gorgeous as usual and Makena beach also known as Big Beach is a favorite tanning and snorkeling/diving spot
I was out on the reef snorkeling with my brother because he doesnt have dive certification and its not safe to dive alone. We were looking at the fish and free diving for all the shells and what not we could see from our limited perspective. Being bound by the amount of air in our lungs, making more than a 20 foot dive while still maintaining the composure to grab shells, avoid urchins and equalize our ear pressure, diving to greater depths is difficult. I happened to see something odd on the ocean floor a little further out, a piece of paper mostly covered by sand at about 30 feet deep. When the waves shifted the sand a little I saw a Bold 20 on the corner and noticed it was green. That cant be a $20 bill can it? i thought to myself. The number looks too big and paper cant survive for long in the water can it? I realized that the magnification of the water could be screwing with me and that U.S. notes are made out of cotton not paper so there was a chance it could be real. I decided to dive for it but at 30 feet it would be difficult. It took me 5 tries to get it because of fighting my own buoyancy and having to equalize several times it was difficult to retain my composure and coordination long enough to get to the depth and still grab at it while wearing my dive gloves. On my third dive i managed to grab at it but it was buried firmly in the sand and i couldnt get it free with enough finesse to keep it from tearing. On my fifth dive i calmed myself and slowed my heart beat before diving taking long deep breaths to up my blood oxygen and lower my bodys' consumption. I finally managed to get to depth and grab on to something to steady myself against the current. With my free hand I brushed away the sand and freed the bill. Success! I was glad to show my skeptical family that there is treasure to be found everywhere. Kind of a sweet treat to up my spirits and show my skeptical family that with determination and persistence one can succeed in treasure hunting. I said to my father upon returning to the beach..."there may not be gold in them thar hills, but theres $20s in that thar ocean. Its a 2004 issue bill by the way if anyone is wondering. Thats one $20 that will never see a cash register again.

Darnit--I was hoping someone would FINALLY find some color in paradise. I've been on 3 of the islands and REALLY looked with pan and detectors for some good ol'oro puro. Plenty of rings, coins, and cash on the beaches but this ol'gold dog would prefer to fire up a dredge there!! But then I wouldn't get to meet all them fine ladies on the beaches??? Tons a au 2 u 2-John ;D

"But then I wouldn't get to meet all them fine ladies on the beaches???"
