Treasure tip, or Legend?

I've heard for many years that back in the old days - pre 1900's, and maybe a little later.....

It was custom to put a coin beneath the hearth stone of a fireplace to give the home good luck. I had heard gold, but it's doubtful many had that much wealth...

Anyone ever heard this?

Until someone pipes in - I searched google and found...French Fireplace Finds ...French regions to place a gold coin beneath or behind a fireplace stone as a good luck charm...

YES !! In my home town of Royston Georgia a man found a small mason jar of 27 gold coins under the fireplace hearth back in the early 1980's which were taken away form him by the lawyer which had hired him to tear down 3 small sharecropper homes on some land he had bought , everyone thinks it was money saved over time from the crops {they did not trust the bank i guess?}
