Found this in a farm field last week and told my wife I found a cup handle. Today I went out to Battle of Monmouth National Park to ask for permissions (none) and went into the museum and saw this:20180925_123457.webp

So, cup handle or trigger guard?

I'm going with trigger guard, you can see the remains of the hole where the screw attached it to the stock. Here's an example that is on my P1853 Snider-Enfield rifle made in 1863.
