This post is a reminder of how not to handle rechargeable batteries.

This is my first post to Treasure Net. I want to say thank you to all of the members who share their adventures and advice. Now the trip to Dewey beach.

My family and I went to Dewey for three days in the middle of July. We stayed at the Atlantic View Hotel. The hotel was inexpensive, but it was clean and right on the beach. Dewey is a dirty little town and all of the nice restaurants are in the adjoining towns of Rehobeth and Bethany.

I have an old Garrett GTA 1000 that worked great in the dry sand. The first evening we found about $2 in change in one hour in a small area in front of the hotel. No jewelry. Back at the hotel I put the metal detector into the car and popped the battery packs out to recharge them for the next evening. And this is the lesson I learned about batteries. There was a key in my pocket. One of the battery packs shorted out and started to melt the plastic battery holder. The battery holder was ruined. And that was the end of my detecting for this trip. Garrett was very nice and sent me two new battery holders for free.

Thanks for the lesson good thing to know.. and yes that was very nice of them indeed

Your story brought tears to my eyes. To be so close to miles of beach and no detector. I always carry a battery holder for alkalines, usually allready with batteries in it. My motto is rechargables and a backup. There is a lot of beach to detect. Keep the faith until the next trip.
