I was doing my thrift store rounds Wednesday and found out my local GW is closed for a week for remodeling, so I headed to another chain thrift nearby which is pretty expensive, at least at this location. Needless to say, I didn’t hold out much hope of finding anything good for a reasonable price. I scanned their boutique section, and found some silver plated items that I started going through. I was ready to put one piece back when I caught the faintest glimpse of a mark on the bottom. I had to carry it around the store until I got into the right lighting to make it out - it was a right-facing lion, which I suspected was a pseudo-hallmark. A quick Google search revealed that it was in fact a Dutch hallmark, along with the makers mark for Johannes Krins. 407 grams of .833 silver for $15 (See what I mean about them being pricey? $15 for “silver plate”?!) I won’t complain this time.
I went from there to another chain thrift, thinking that I had used up my luck for the day. The very first piece I picked up in the silver plate section was marked plain as day “Sterling”, and weighed 595 grams! Naturally, I went through the entire silver plate section in hopes that the same person had donated a bunch of silver, but that was my only decent find. On the way to the register I went through the belts and found a small Sterling western belt buckle (55 grams).
My first triple-silver day! Pictures to come later today, just had to share. HH!
