Trunk latch?

I found this in the same area where I found my Dodge Brothers 1929 emblem. So I am wondering if maybe it is an old trunk latch or something. It was obviously painted black at one point. Any ideas?

It looks like some kinda latch to open the hood, trunk or gas cover. It has an extra hole that may be for a cable.

I agree, looks like a friction latch and the extra hole may have been for a padlock.

It is 1 1/2" X 2".

I vote that the extra hole was for a spring. Beyond that I've got nothin'

Could be a release latch...like that for car hoods...pull and the hood pops open....
