I cannot yet post a picture due to an inferior phone but I dug up what looks like a very old token today.

It's a copper 5 cent token with the name H.L. Carrick on it. The reverse is blank except for a small border and it's just a bit smaller than a quarter. It was found in Howard County MD. not far from the Patapsco river.

I looked up the name "Carrick" in MD and the family has been here since the colonial days as far as I can tell. I have found references to the last name and a few vague references to the initials "H.L." with very little details.

I can't find this particular token listed anywhere nor do I have any idea what type of token it is.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Tokens and buttons are hard to ID, you really need to post some pix to really get a ID (you never know though, someone still might know what it is from your limited description) I hope you get a ID, good luck!

Thanks.
I figured this is a long shot but you just never can tell.

Does it say 5 cents, or does it just have a 5 on it? I ask because there are a lot of pickers checks from Maryland. Don''t have a listing I can find for this either.

It has the initials "HL" at the top, the numeral 5 in the center followed by the "cents" sign dead center and the name "Carrick" across the bottom. The letters follow the curvature of the token. There is a thin border on both sides but no type on the reverse.

Then we'll probably wait and see what idahotokens has to say. He seems to have a lot of references, and with token in the subject line, he's sure to take a peek.

It could be from a store or shop the Carrick family once owned. I found a token once with a family name, it was local name I recognized. Turns out they were still in business. It was a shoe store that had been ran by the same family continually for over 100 years, with there last name as the name of the business. Like Smith's Shoes, but not Smith's, that was an example. I think they lasted from 1903- 2009 . Anyway the token had initials and the families name on it, just like yours. It also said 25% off or 2.00 off. So sort of a joke I went into their shop and said hay look I have this token do I get 25% percent off? The owner looked at me puzzled. Then I explained how I had found this token detecting, showed it to him and the man was almost in tears.. He tells me those are his great grandfathers initials and starts reaching in his pocket for money wanting to pay me for it. Tells me he has never seen one or never new such a token existed. He then tells me around 1910 his great grandfather also owned a pool hall next door and some other neat history. Anyway I just gave it to the fellow of course. Sadly to make a long story short they went out of business a few years later. After being around for over 100 years. Look into it further if the family is still around.

I'll start my search tomorrow. I would love to locate a family member and put this thing in someone's hand that has some meaningful attachment to it.

I'll post any progress I make.

Thanks for the story and the idea. That's truly awesome that you were able to do that.
