On Tuesday Oct 11th I recieved my newely purchased used Minelab Sovereign Detector in the mail from Sweet Dreams Detectors, A.K. as Rick from Nova Scotia . Thanks Rick ! I bought the machine to hunt the saltwater flats and beaches this winter when the ground is frozen . But of course I had to try to get through the learning curve and could not resist the chance to start swinging tuesday night on my own lawn to see what this rig can do . Just playing around with the settings on my lawn for two hours I was surprised to pull 3 wheaties and an early Memorial. Wensday after work I came home and headed back out to my own lawn to try to get comfotable with a few different settings and managed to pop an Indian head and a Buffalo nickel and the lantern piece . Only the 2nd Indian head I have found on my lawn
I was starting to feel more comfortable with the Sovereign,s Aussie speech in my head phones ! Before this I had only used Tessoro,s and this machine is taking a bit to get used to. Thursday after work I decided to pass it over one of my closest site that has gone quiet with the tessoros and although I didn't set it on fire I did come home with a beautiful bridal rossette with a lot of silver plating still on the front , The big old all cast iron lock , and the interesting early looking sash buckle. . Friday after work. 2 hours going over the most productive areas of another site that has been good to me in the past a merc an Indian and the gold gilted pin with the red Inlay . Rank pin ?? and made a few more finds . I did not hunt on saturday because my son came home from Japan . This morning I took the soverign to a site I had never been to . I was told there was a foundation in the woods but never found it . I did come across an old partying spot from the late 40.s and managed to pull 2 Mercs, a rosie . the Boy scout pin and some wheaties out amonst the many pulltabs . Tonight after supper I made my favorite find of the week in the wooded park I frequent . A late 19th century Deering, Maine Fire department badge . The city that was Deering was annexed by Portland in 1899. I actually found the anual reports of the Deering Fire Dept online and found a reference which states ( August 1893 The Council passed an order to Furnish badges to all Fire department members. At this time there were 60 men on their roster . The Reports also state the Deering Fire Department was redistricted and became the Portland fire dept, in 1899 thanks for looking M.R.
