I'd guess a manganese-based mineral.

Some more info. SG for rock was 4.07 with about a third of the rock quartz. Streak was a reddish brown. Probably not a tungston mineral. Hematite? I've never seen radiating faces like that with Hematite. Bought it at a rock swap. Lady who sold it to me didn't know what was either.

Manganite is my bet.

I'm thinking goethite. Acicular pattern, same color streak as hematite, SG is a fit (barely)
It does look a lot like goethite, i'll see if I can dig some of my goethite up....
