Two coins donated to Salvation Army may prove worthless replicas

SALISBURY -- Bell ringers recently discovered two potentially rare coins -- a 1799 Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Dollar and a 1878 Morgan Dollar -- in a Salvation Army red kettle near Berlin.

Why would some scrooge screw with a charity orginization
that does such great things for needy families?

A real 1799 Draped Bust Eagle Dollar is worth around $7000.00 (depending on condition). A fake one is worth about $25.00!

A real 1878 Morgan Dollar with a San Francisco mint mark is worth only around $50.00. I am sure no one is going to make a fake one with this mint mark. So, I assume that it is a Carson City mint mark, which is worth around $1700.00 depending upon condition. A fake one, again is probably only worth about $25.00!

If both coins are genuine then they have a chance to auction them off for about $8,000.00 or $9,000.00. If they are both fake then they will probably get about $50.00 at an auction. Either way, the Salvation Army makes out!

A real 1799 silver dollar has the word "Liberty" on the front. It also has a set of either seven and six stars or eight and five stars along the border.

The Salvation Army coin, however, is missing the word "Liberty" on its face and has a set of eight and seven stars.

The 1878 Morgan Dollar depicts Lady Liberty with "E Pluribus Unum" -- meaning, "Out of many, one" -- on the front of the coin. On the other side,

the silver dollar has "Goloid Metric" spelled out in the center.
