I have a brass horse tack buckle with and iron pin. Is there a way to clean and preserve the iron? I've read that electrolysis will hurt the brass.

Mix molasses with water 50/50 ratio.
Soak buckle for two weeks.
Rinse.
Wax/lacquer.
