Sheesh. Wish I dig one them up ;)

I have one some where I just thought it was a Zinkon that never got plated.

If it is a modern coin, then on a rare occasion they do have errors that end up partly or not plated at all and are worth $$$ to people who collect error currency.

why couldn't they do a similar deal with the govt like they did with the only 1933 $20 King Farouk coin? The govt "monetizes" the coin but it has to be sold and then the proceeds are split between owner and govt.

The King Farouk coin was legally exported from the USA and was even granted a legal export license by the feds at the time it was taken out of the US. Thus the owners had a legal leg to stand on if the feds wanted to battle it out in the courts. It was "monetized" as part of a settlement to that very lawsuit. This coin however was smuggled out of the mint by an employee and the owners really have no legal hope of winning that one no matter how long ago it happened. There is one more known example out there that was given away by a congressman in the 70's but i dont know it's current situation.
