Hello! My son and I were doing some metal detecting in a spot where I've found a bunch of notched net weights, and these two stones popped out of the holes we dug in the gravel. We were on the Susquehanna in South Central PA.

The larger stone I originally thought was just a natural break on a cobble that the water has worn down but then I noticed that the top was slightly concave and maybe pecked out?

The smaller piece of quartz looks to my untrained eye like a point that they were trying to make but possibly blew out the one side notch.

I very much appreciate any info about these that you could share, and can certainly post pictures of other angles of these if it helps.

Thanks

That first piece looks remarkably like a discoidal in the first picture, and then convincingly like a natural rock in the others. I think the little piece of quartz is likely natural as well.

I was thinking discoidal too but it seems like maybe the middle pics are warped or it’s being held at a strange angle it appears too oval shaped in those pics, the others It looks just fine for a discoidal the quartz is notoriously tough to photograph but I don’t see much evidence of man with that

The quartz piece looks natural, not really sure about the other. Don't blame you for picking it up.

Thank you! The rock is definitely oblong so I doubt it would roll really well. I do think it was worked but for what purpose, I don't know. And I could very well be wrong.

Maybe I'll try to roll it across my yard. Like the game of sporting clays, maybe this acts as a 'rabbit' that bounces on the ground for an extra challenging shot, haha.

Appreciate the responses!

I was looking again even though the one shot looks like a perfect discoidal with the shape and the other side which looks flat I was wondering about a grinding stone with a cup to smash nuts

That's what I was thinking, the first shot is a perfect discoidal, the other pictures changed my opinion.

If discoidal it should be cupped on both sides.,, small for a mortar as well. All the material is correct for artifacts to be made from.

i don't think it is a discoidal, but would consider it worked.
