Nice Buttons, Congrats....

Are they one piece buttons. If so they date 1790's to 1830's. If they are 2 piece they probably date 1840's -50's If you could post pics of the backs that might help with a closer date. The pattern on the face is called a woven design and was popular on those type of buttons

One of the key ways to ID a button is to look at the back for a makers mark ::) Can you take some good pics of the backs?? They do look like they are old but how old is the question. Nice finds. Hope you get them ID'd

there one piece buttons the small of the 2 is very light . like made of pewter ........i'll take a pic of the back after cleaning

I think my button find is very similar..if not the same.. Photos below.. Mine was found in Italy.

The checkerboard pattern one, to the top left, dates to 1750-1780. I know because I have the exact same one. Congrats............Hogge :headbang:

They did use that pattern in the 1700's but used it well into the 1800's too. The backs may give a better indication of the dates

From what I can see I would say they both date late 1700's to about 1810 or so. The button in the left is backmarked. I can see an eagle and I think I can see the word plate. The British started backmarking their buttons in the 1790's or so. The US not until about 1810. Both of these buttons look fairly thin. From what I seen the buttons dating after about 1810 are a bit thicker.

While preparing for my button presentation this month at SJMDC I came across your exact backmark in Tice's Dating Buttons book. Pg 262 Fig 9
Ca. 1795-1815 An alpha, copper wire shank has been flux-joined to the back. There is a split anvil line and raised backmark depicting an eagle and TREBLE PLATED on a ribbon. The photo he has in his book is a match.

His example is basket weave design, but the backmark is identical.

Don

Congrats on the buttons. I love the old buttons.
