I ended up buying a collection of NC artifacts. I don't feel like I got ripped off at all, but this artifact here is definitely something I would like to get some help on. There's going to be a local artifact show this Saturday and I'm going to take this piece there but I figured I'd share it here too. I'm guessing it's maybe a Guilford preform, a large cache blade, or even a flaked celt? Then, I'm trying to figure out what the material is. It definitely looks different for NC, maybe from TN or some state west instead? It kinda looks like Horse Creek chert. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

A lot of material in north Florida and southern Georgia has that color from iron

I wouldn't think that was from North Carolina unless maybe along the coast

Oh... It looks like a hoe

I really don't know how to differentiate whether that's flint or chert. A non-geologist like me would guess it's chert. I have seen very little chert artifacts in NC but I know they can exist. There is some chert formations/quarries in the eastern Piedmont and probably in the coastal area too. You say a hoe? Why not a flaked celt? Lol, yall say hoe a lot on here I've noticed.

Looks like it's from TN area

How thick is it ?

Does this look close to you it's broke

Nah, I see luster or a shiny look on that one. Mine has no luster. It's dull with a reddish burgundy to tan color.

Oh yea, I see what you mean. Yes, it looks like it would be the same shape but a piece is missing off yours. Mine is a lil bigger too.

Jasper is essentially a metamorphosed chert. Also, it can be called red chert (and like Gatorboy said) that can be from iron. Jasper is a good guess too b/c there is a mix of colorations. I would say your close but I am looking for a more specific name. You have jasper or Horse Creek chert from TN?

I would say a preform blade or cache blade like you had mentioned when you find out let me know ;)

Oh yea, I think you're right! Your material looks orange/red in color. I have some jasper I've found here but mine is a deeper blood red.
