I just recently bought, and I have started to distribute a large(3000+ pieces) well documented collection. This piece is clearly one of my favorites in the collection, but I am not sure how to type it. Material is Flint Ridge, size is 5"+. It shows a small stem at the bottom. I don't know why I want to say Late Paleo/Plano, but I do. Anyone else have any ideas?
Regards,
Jon Dickinson.
P.S.- If anyone wants to buy themselves a Christmas present, look me up.

jon looks plano to me also, there were a few pieces in the oldtime belden collection that looked just like that one

Great looking Lance Jon. Kind of an unusually small stem imo. Late paleo would be my guess as well. Check your inbox. Feel free to post some pics of that collection...

If that was from Tennessee I would call it a Benton, is the base or lower edges ground? I have several large Bentons with identical bases. None are ground.

I do not know where it was from Jon but agree it resembles a lot of Bentons. ?

My first thought was a Benton as well, but since it was found in Huron county in northern Ohio along the lake I don't think that type ranges that far. Killer piece no matter what the type.

Yes, it does resemble Benton in form. I really don't know on the piece. I am sure it is real. I really need to ask some of the Northern Ohio guys about oddball types out that way. I don't think Bentons creep up that far North, but certainly something to think about. Thanks for the responses.

In Hothems " Paleo-Indian Artifacts " book on page 219(bottom right) there's a similar lanceolate with a short stem from Cosh. County. FWIW. I can definitely see the Benton characteristics but those big Bentons are usually notched and more of a southern type. JMHO

Thirty,

Can you post the pic of that piece? I have a Hothem book on Paleo, but it must be a different work.
Thanks,
Jon.

The stem is a bit longer on the Cosh piece but pretty similar imo. Poor indoor lighting, sorry.
