I found this old lock base (minus the hasp) today along with some Civil War buttons and other old objects. I'm wondering if this was a military issue, or just a civilian lock made to look "official", sort of like the ones that read "U.S. Mail", etc. I'm leaning toward civilian , but I would love to have someone prove me wrong and tell me this was a Civil War issue! Thanks.

Been gone for a while--sorry! The base is U-shaped brass. The locking portion is missing--just drawn in with magic marker. Thanks!

I'VE BEEN GONE FOR A WHILE WITH NO INTERNET ACCESS, BUT JUST WANTED TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS YOU POSTED FOR ME!!!

Ive seen that lock dug before.....I believe they said there wasn't a way to attribute it to the military. Think its civilian...but Im not the final word on that by any means.

Thats really cool. Nice find.

Nice Lock....now to find that chest of gold coins it went on....

I dug one exactly like that... I have also seen them posted many other times. My favorite lock!

As have I! I wish I could remember the dates they created them but I think it was early 1900's

Nice find!
