U.S. Mint Decides To Eliminate The Penny

Coinflation.com Press Release
Posted April 1, 2007

U.S. Mint Director Edmund Moy announced today they will cease production of the U.S. cent immediately. "We met as a staff and decided a change is warranted at this time," Moy told a group of reporters in the U.S. Mint Pressroom.

Speculation had been mounting that the Mint would make a change soon. Recents public opinion polls suggested that removing the penny from circulation would be well-received and have little impact on the economy.

When asked why they're moving ahead with this change without congressional approval, Moy answered, "I consulted with the Attorney General and he advised me congressional approval wasn't necessary, despite what the constitution says. This is a decision that the executive branch has complete authority to make. Since I serve at the pleasure of the President, I made the call. It's a done deal."

When asked to further clarify if it was his decision solely, or made collectively by his staff (as stated earlier in the press conference), he suddenly didn't recall details of the meeting.

"I'm not really involved with the day-to-day, I don't recall who actually made the decision."

When further pressed about the details of the decision, Mint Director Moy stated that the penny has been prominently involved with financial transactions involving well-known terror groups. "Listen, we're trying to protect the American public from the terrorists by eliminating the penny. The security of the nation depends on this action. I think the American people know exactly what the threat is and we're just doing what's in their best interest."

Moy added, "To protect freedom, we're going to aggressively prosecute anyone attempting to use a penny, or even carry a penny."

The new rule goes into effect April 1, 2007.

I got bad news for you, the mint may eliminate the cents and nickels, which make me out rage. Read about the story in Coin World. The public wants and needs these coins. What we don't want or need is 5 and a half millions George Washington dollars minted this year. Not, unless, some one want to thown all these coins in a brook near Bates Tavern in East Granby, Connecticut, so, writers can write about this treasure in treasure magazines every year for many years to come, and have treasure hunters from all over looking for them. More bad news, the mint is going to make more dollars this year and many years to come. First, I became a coin collector, then a treasure hunter.

Bout time. Round up or round down. None of us will go broke giving up a nickel. None of will get rich gaining one either. Bout time ;) ;)

You'd be surprised. A few nickels here and there goes a long way my friend. I've known some immensely wealthy people who got that way by saving every penny they could. You call them cheap, but I call them brilliant.

Gentlemen:

Did you ACTUALlY read the Mint site ?? No mention what-so-ever is made of pennys, snicker reminds me that today is April 1 .

Djui, No wonder you haven't found the lDM yet sheesh.

Get rid of the penny?! Thats ridiculous. Instead we should introduce 4-cent, 9-cent, 24-cent and 99-cent coins. :P

What's the LDM?

;) Getting closer every day.

Realizing this is a joke, but eliminating the cent would not be a joke. Does anybody have any idea how much this would cost businesses and therefore how much it would cost US? All kinds of machines would have to be modified or replaced. The price of everything would go up for that task alone. Then we'd have the increased prices of commodities such as food and gasoline. We would be staring a rise in inflation and a lot of confusion IF things remained fractional except at the checkout stand. IOW, you buy a pound of steak that costs $3.59/lb., but since there are no cents, the price if rounded up to $3.60/lb. But what if you buy 3 lbs? Does it get rounded up on each pound or on the total price of the 3 pounds, or rounded down? So would your steaks cost you $10.80 or $10.75? And if this happened on cans of soup, fish bait, rifle cartridges, gasoline, flowers, etc. you would be spending a lot more for your stuff - INFLATION.

Don't like cents? Fine, toss them into a donation can at the store. But please don't think that eliminating cents is a good thing. The mint produces many new coins so that it can make money on numismatists - the mint doesn't have to worry about the increased cost of copper (taxpayers might be concerned, but not the mint). And if they did worry about the price of copper, they could make them out of steel again like in 1943. Actually, it's a bogus concern because there isn't much copper in a cent anyway.

Imagine the social implications of doing away with the penny....

No more penny-ante
No more "penny for your thoughts" or "two cents worth"...."nickel for your thoughts" and "dimes worth" just don't roll off the tongue
No more pennies from heaven
Some girls would have to change their names
We'd have to start pinching nickels
That novelty souvenir machine at the zoos and museums would cost 4 cents more (having to squash a nickel instead of a penny)
The practical joke of diming a door shut doesn't sound as funny

The first of course to round UP would be the states that charge a sales tax.. Canada has also floated the idea of eliminating the penny.. But stop and think.. About the only thing you do with pennies, is pay sales taxes. Ontario's sales tax is 8% our beloved GST is 6%.. The Canada's Conservative government has already said it is going to lower the federal GST to 5%, but Liberals run Ontario, and Liberals, like liberals everywhere, have never met a buck they couldn't waste.. Would they lower the provincial sales tax from 8% to 5% or would the raise it to 10% and blame in on Conservative policies to eliminate the penny..
This is a no brainier... In Ontario, GST & PST are added to just about every thing bought. Put these to together, and sound them out, you get the attitude of the entire Provence on these two taxes GST PST!

Wouldn't matter about the % of sales tax, only the amount of money you would pay. 8% of $100 is eight dollars, you would still pay eight dollars in tax.

I hate to see any coins taken out of the picture---I throw all loose change into a jar and every year cash them in just before I take off for 3 weeks vacation. Mostly pennies and nickels and I usually have in excess of $350 every year. Those pennies and nickels add up.
Just one opinion.

They should do away with the paper dollar, and penny. Your coin jar would fill up a lott quicker, I promise.
