Ugh....questions..you're probably sick of answering.....

Someone will probably want to punch me in the teeth for asking this stuff but I need to get started so I am ready for spring. I do not own a MD and would like to know what you guys find are some of the more important features. Are they capable of picking up gold and silver on the same setting? Is there a setting that picks up all metals? How deep down can you get a hit? I realize the depth probably depends on the size of the metal, soil type, possibly moisture etc but I am just looking for a ball park depth. What do you find is the best areas for a newbie to hit? I have a MineLab catalog I have been looking at but conveniently there are no prices by the products. How much do you think a guy needs to spend to get a decent machine? How's the resale value if I ever want to upgrade? O.k., you can start punching me in the teeth.

Bottlecap,

Here is my suggestion, buy a metal detector that is within your budget. Learn the machine by taking it to where you have legal access to hunt. You will learn what the machine is telling you after some time. There is no "Magic Machine". Good luck, have fun, and be safe.

BTW, I've never heard of anyone being punched in the teeth here for asking a question. We all ask, read, and learn.

Not really looking for a "magic machine", hope I didn't come off like that. Just looking for a few reputable brands, possibly model's people would recommend, and a good place to buy them. Money is no object, I'm a millionaire....totally kidding, I think between some tax money and crap I sell on flea bay I can comfortably spend between two and three hundred dollars. I have wanted to do this for a long time and would spend more if someone told me it would be better. I am not under the impression the machine makes you a better detector, just want a few good leads. Thanks for the reply GaRebel!

Bottlecap,

I did not see what part of the country you are from. If it was on there, you might get an offer from someone to spend a little hands on time with a machine before you spent any money. I know I have done just that for several people. Ask around and see if someone is willing to just give you a starter class. We are talking less than an hour. You would learn alot. It would very likely save any disappointment down the road. Nothing wrong with being the new guy, the newbie, the tenderfoot, etc. Would really like to see you succeed and start out on the right foot. Just the hands on knowledge of to dig a plug and how to NOT dig a plug would make it worth the time for both people.

Good luck, hope some one will step up and offer a little time.

HI BOB!

Spend some time looking through the posts on this board and the Metal Detectong board asking similar questions. You will find a huge amount of information. Also take look at the Brands board for details on various machines you are interested in.

Ah for crying out loud I didn't even see the brand thread! Well spend alotof time this evening checking that out. Thanks for the replies. I am located in Minnesota, will update my profile soon. Maybe I should get this thread moved to the metal detecting section?

Well, if it were me, I would buy an entry level detector from any of the brand name companies. Maybe a Garrett Ace 250, Fisher F2, Minelab 305, or something similar. I started with a Bounty Hunter Quik Draw II. It did very well for me. Id buy a pinpointer, like the Garrett. I use a vibra-probe water proof pinpointer and a mounted Sunray probe. I would also buy a little better digger, although you could start with a gardening/flower trowel. I use and really like the blue handled Treasure Wise digger. These 3 items will have cost you at least $400- probably more. I wouldn't buy from ebay. I prefer to buy from my local dealer, or even one of the supporting vendors here. Mine happens to be both.
Then its all about the time and effort. Here you also get what you pay for. With some effort and some time you should be able to pay for your investment. You will never get paid for your time.
Respect landowners and their property and have fun!

You need a Lesche hand digger $45.00, a finds bag $12-$25.00, gloves, kneepads (handheld pinpointer like a Garrett Pro-Pointer is optional), and one of these:

Locate a dealer near you and go in for a hands on test drive of a few different ones in your price range, you also should consider what you want to hunt for, coins, silver, gold, relics, etc. Where you will be using it most often, beach, field, park, what's the soil type like etc.

Practice pin pointing, digging and refill holes neatly in your yard first.
Welcome! Happy hunting and good luck!
