Keys are in the pic for scale. Farm/CW battlefield. The side with the "striations" . . . that material is like hard plastic. It can be shaved off with a knife. I originally thought oil lamp part. But the striated "plastic" (??) is throwing me. Right where the most heat would be?? unless it's asbestos or something to insulate the flame from the fuel . . . I'm totally stumped. Some kind of bearing or oil seal?

is it black ? maybe Bakelite ? asbestos is grey and fiberous.

ticndig - Good question. No. If you "shave it" with a sharp blade, it's white and non-fibrous. Like white plastic
