I thought it was a piece of twisted metal, but it seems twisted by design as the to "loops" meet back-to-back. Any idea???

I was sort of thinking the same thing, but wasn't sure. Do you think it was bent in half and then pulled back, kind of like a tennis ball container? On those just the top peels back, not the rim it's attached to.

That's what I'm thinking but where it's connected isn't a hinge. It's rigid. Thoughts on that?

Its part of the centre frame & not the hinged part that moved.
