Looks like this one had 2 handles. The "mug" type grip for directional signaling and a wire type handle that would have connected to the two holes on the sides for carrying. The larger hole in front would have housed the bulb and the lens.. I'm going to guess that it was a battery model.

Looks like, second photo, it would lock on another piece. Those L shaped holes would be used to lock it, the

handle would be used to turn it into or out of the lock position. Do not think it is a lamp.

Could it be some type of collector for ashes or for holding coal? The holes in the sides could be to allow air into it to keep a fire going?

Whatever it is, it locked onto something else.

I see what you mean about the l shapes on top to lock it on to something, it could be to lock a top on maybe ??? I still think it has something to do with light or fire or something like that....any other info would be a great help :)

The first headlamps on automobiles were similar looking things only they didn't have handles. The round hole in the front would have had a magnifying lens and a candle was placed inside and lit. The lid was put back on the top and it gave off light for a short distance. Not very effective but at 8 to 15 mph it helped. Perhaps it is a handheld version of a lamp? JIM

Well whatever it is maybe it was ment to be carried or attached to something, like a versatile light.
