I soak mine in water for a couple days when they are like that, then lightly hit with toothbrush. Sometimes it won't come off. Sometimes it does. Nice finds. Round ball should be period. They used those also.

Water dosent hurt the patina, just don't brush to hard.

Also wanted to post this from the hunt. I did not find the item. It was recovered by my digging buddy. At the time we debated it was too modern but the patina showed some age. It's a Union napsack clasp. The wheat was not found on site just used as reference.

Those are rarely found up here in CT.
 

I don't clean mine anymore than that. But that's my preference.
