union map symbols

Just need an interpretation. On several union maps, there is an indication of the camp site. Surrounding the camp site are various symbols which looks like a "L" and on the opposite side a mirror image of a "L". On some maps the "L" is in a square box. Does anybody know what this means? Thanks

"L" if I know. Post a pic of the map or a portion thereof.
