Went out sunday afternoon into the woods and found what I beleive has never been posted here before. Got a signal that was good enough to dig. It turned out to be a shot gun shell, but something in the hole caught my eye. On closer examination it turned out to be a hibernating frog. I did not gouge him or otherwise cause him harm and I covered him back up. Don't know if he will survive the winter. The ground here in connecticut is mostly frozen and the woods are my last chance at easy digging. Hope I don't disturb any more amphibians.

HEY!!! I dug a huge toad on my last hunt! No kidding. I didn't know they hibernated. Pretty kool. Wanted to mention it in my post but forgot until I saw yours. Hogge

I dig up scorpions..

I live out here in the Mojave Desert,Ca. There's a zillion scorpions out here. And black widow spiders two of which have sunk their poisoness fangs into me. Scorpions hibernate underground when winter comes. So I'm down 4' into a pit digging and kazoom, scorpions appear. In winter they're sleepy so no problemo. But when spring comes I dig them up very much alive and feeling their oats. In summer they're bearing young. I once dug into an underground nest of baby scorpions. Didnt notice them till after they had zoomed up my blue jeans. I don't wear shorts so this presented a danger that something I'm attached to might get bitten. I jumped out of the pit, tore off my blue jeans and danced-around nekked swearing like a sailor. Nobody saw me but a coyote and some big lizzards.

I find a lot of white werid looking worms/grub thingy looking bugs.

Have never found a frog that was hibernating. But found a ball of about 5 or 6 snakes about 25 years ago.
Snakes are not as bad as they used to be. What we have here in S. Korea are huge millipeds......the red ones are
bad enough, but we have some black, ugly monster-sized millipeds that are 3 - 4 inches long. More poisenous then
the poisen snakes we have here. Dig them up all the time. Don't think they hibernate, but they go deep into the
rocks, and really don't like to be disturbed.
Be safe, fellow THers.....
