Found this today in a well hunted CSA campsite. While we were there a fellow MD'er stopped by the field to tell us the field had been hunted by many folks over the years and it was doubtful we'd find anything. We'll shortly after he parted I did find this brass (?) item. It is exactly 2" long, 1" diameter with an unthreaded hole through the center. Any help would be great.

Could it be a candle stick holder? HH :icon_thumright:

What about a piece of a lamp that slides over a threaded pipe as a decorative spacer? But if it were from the Civil War, that would be unlikely.

Brass can attain a red look after being in a fire, perhaps the blackened areas are soot/carbon deposits. That piece does look like it has been in or near a low temp or quick fire.

I was thinking a finial for something such as a lamp or maybe part of fireplace poker handle or something like that. Its solid (except for the hole of course). It may have come from a field known as a campsite but that does not mean its from that period. Honestly I don't know. Is it brass? Does brass oxidize red?

It could be something else but resembles a lamp part.

I'll go with lamp part. I was hoping for something spectacular but I'll settle for interesting and decorative. Thanks everyone.

I could have saved everyone's time had I been more observant in my own home. Last night I reached over to turn out the lamp on the end table and saw that the lamp had 2 pieces stacked that looked almost exactly like the brass I found. So, lamp piece it is.
