I found this brass item at the beach in the the wet sand. When I first dug it, I thought it was just a fishing weight. It has an eye on each end just like a lot of them I've found. This on however is brass....and it comes apart! Inside as a small disc, almost like a watch battery but it isn't. It has a rubber O-ring (not seen in the photo) that seals the two halves together. Ok, I'm ready for ideas as my mind is smoking trying to figure it out myself!

A survival matchstick holder?

Many lures for fresh water contain a rattle. Usually a very small plastic tube with a metal ball inside. Wonder if that could be the salt water version of the same.:dontknow:

Whale or shark tracking device maybe.

I like the idea of it being a fish rattle, I'd say take it to a tackle shop and see if they've seen one like it.

looks like some hippies stash container

Yea...at first glance it looked like a piece of a pipe...but its obvious its suppose to be water proof....and the fact its made of brass means it probally doesnt float....i would guess it has some to do with fishing

If not a match holder, it could well be a necklace style pill holder.

I like the idea of it being a rattle jig for fishing but I've just never seen one that looks like this. All the ones I've seen look like a regular style lure, with hooks and all. Would a necklace pill holder have an eye on both ends?

I suppose it is possible .. My neighbor once had a cremation urn necklace that held a pinch of her son's ashes that had two eyelets on it.

On closer inspection, there is actually a second "pill" inside stuck to the bottom. Both of them are made of lead.

I think it could be a fishing float that was weighted with the miscellaneous piece of lead and other item inside in order for it to float at the correct depth.
Either it floats or it don't float.

I doesn't float....sinks like a rock....even with both weights removed.
