Found this in North Texas. Heavy brass. Flat on the back. Anyone have any idea what it is?

[sprailroad]

Have not a clue. Guess I'd have to go with a N. Texas brass flat thing. Sometimes ya find something and wonder, what the heck is this?

[sonofmitch]

Guessing that you must be a railroad fan means to me that it's probably
not railroad related.

Hi Mitch. What you have there is a key that is used to remove the cover from a water meter. I was told this by a water dept. employee. He said it was an unreliable system and often difficult to engage the inner mechanism. That's probably why we find them with detectors. I have found two, both near water meters. I've tried to find an example on google with no luck so far.
