Unknown "sterling" item

I dug this item in a park from the 1860's. It says sterling on it but it is very thin and doesn't have any other markings on it. Any ideas?

Ferrule off of a cane.

Probably off a knife. It crimps the wood where the blade is inserted.

The most common use of these were on pipe stems.

I found one similar to this ,it was part of a vintage perfume bottle .
