"Unknown"

I am in the lawn care business and I finally got up enough nerve to ask a customer if i could hunt her property, a house built in 1740. After office work on sunday I had about an hour and gave it a try, not much time but exiting. I got the usual iron junk and some clad, no old coins yet. There is about 2 1/2 acres of property and I stayed at the very far end of the property in the unmanicured lawn area. I did get this item that has peaked my interest. It is a small sheild with C.T. in the middle and two 8's on IMG_0262 (Medium).webp the bottom left and right. I took some 0000 steel wool to try and clean it a bit but am afraid I am only going to damage it. Any ideas? I plan to go back again hopefully this weekend.

Re: "Unknown"

Nice finds, WTG.

I believe that your small shield piece with the initials C.T. 88 on it is a campaign badge that was used by Grover Cleveland in 1888.  His running mate was Allen G. Thurman.  Thus the initials.  It was always fairly common to use the candidates last name intitials on political items of the time.

Hope that you are lucky enough to find more.
