I found this piece a few inches under at the new site I've been digging now that the weeds are gone. The buttons and coins in the area are from the 1810's to the 1890's so this piece is likely from that date range, but I've never seen anything like it.

The gray/green color is a brass sheet that's sandwiched between the two layers or iron and held together with iron rivets. There's a little loop of twisted iron wire that looks like it was used to secure it to something, but definitely isn't part of the original design. It almost looks like a type of horseshoe except the iron doesn't look thick enough to be used for that. Any thoughts on this?
