Unusual river find

[Older The Better]

Found this in southeast Kansas on the river today, the white one is a cow/bison tibia for comparison, looked up horse and it was actually more beefy than a cow, maybe an elk? Some Pleistocene fauna? 99% sure it’s not human I’m 6’3” and it’s longer than my lower leg and it’s broken

Lots of ice-age stuff has been found on the Kansas plains. Bison latifrons?

It could be any number of mammals... caribou, moose or even Native American?
I might suggest that you contact a local museum in your area.

If I ever have time I’d like to take it to a museum, all of them around here are small volunteer ones, Lawrence and Manhattan are both around two hours away.

I thought horse too but after consulting my book horse tibias are more robust than cows




I’m not so sure the white one isn’t a horse, other than the fact I found it in a cow pasture and was told by an archaeology professor it was buffalo because it was buried, I’m not sure what to think of it anymore. But the other seemed to look more like a deer except way too large for a white tail, so I’m thinking it may be an extinct animal.

Greetings OTB, I'm confused about the photos. One view looks like the bone in question has both condyles complete. The other looks like a condyle on one end and a blade on the other? Perhaps a side view of 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees? If that was a human tibia, that's one tall dude! "Is there a Doctor in the house"?

The top is missing the bottom is complete, the bottom is different from human if I’m not mixing up my anatomy looks like an astragalus would fit better than a talus

Funny you say chupacabra because I caught a coyote crossing the river on video and it looks exactly like a chupacabra video... at least I think it was a coyote...

I’m sure it was a coyote it was just funny how much my video looked like what you see on those shows... the extreme zoom, kind of grainy, shaking a bit, coyote running funny because it’s in thick mud, it even gives the look over its shoulder showing a head profile... I can just see the show pausing on the head turn and experts pointing out features... I wanted to post the video but I don’t see the option, at least from a phone.

Maybe a hyote. All good evidence gets wiped from the interwebs and replaced with a mangy coyote. Darn conspiracies.

Took your advice, I was told it was in the cervidae family which includes elk and deer, I was told they would need a skull to tell which it may be, I come across lots of deer in the woods I can say for sure it’s no whitetail so I’m guessing elk, they used to be in Kansas up to about 150 years ago
