(So I go back and this time the jerky son answers the door, but I get him talking and starting working the diplomacy, talking about things he's interested, people he knows in town, etc. Then I remind him that he had asked me to leave after his mom gave me permission. So, he's getting nicer about it and says, "I'll have to ask my mom if it's ok" -- then he comes back and says the mom said no this time. I can't win with these two. I got a good cop/bad cop, but they keep switching roles.)

A block from my house is an historic, 310 year old tree that is a landmark, protected, etc. The roads there used to be main roads between NY City and Albany. The only silver half reale I found was a couple hundred yards away along the road near an old foundation and cemetary and right near it I found a large cent and an Indian head and a friend found a flying eagle. Well, gettng back to where the tree is there's a big open lot of land that used to be the entrance to an estate back to the 1800s and it's all original land and there are two big pillars where the driveway was. The people who own the land are an older mother and a son probably in his 30s or 40s. Their house is way on the other side of the land, probably 200 yards away and the land just sits there and is not manicured or anything, but very detectable. I asked the lady a while back if I could search and she said yes and I barely got in about 1/2 hour and found a 1908 barber dime. The jerky son comes driving up in his truck and asks what I'm doing and tells me who he is and I say your mom gave me permission and he said "tough" and asked me to leave. I even tried explaining that I'm a neighbor, etc., but no luck. So, now I have to drive past that property almost every day wondering what else must be in there. It's probably 300 yards by 50 yards of property.

:-\ :-\ :-\

But congrats on the dime!

;)

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

Screw the barber dime, go back and get me some more large cents!
earthworks....

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

Congrats on the dime. Go back to the mother and give her some candy, tell her you are sorry if your detecting caused any problems with her son. She probably doesn't even know he threw you off the land. Maybe she will override that jack-butt of a son and let you continue.

Better yet, take her some jerky.....for the jerky guy. :D I agree with Lucky. Go talk to the mother again.

Good luck!

I have a great recipe for "jerky". Wish my recipe for Barber Dimes was as good !! Congrats. Ron

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

I feel your pain. Searched a park/rec center a while back. I had read in the paper that it was scheduled to be torn up and completely redone. My second trip there I dug up 2 pretty nice gold rings. My next trip there they had started tearing up the park. I got there just before the crew was leaving and asked the foreman if I could search the area where they hadn't worked on yet. He didn't have a problem with it but as he was leaving, he stopped at the rec center office and shortly after the rec center director comes out telling me I have to leave. What stinks is that same guy gave me permission to hunt there but he told me that when the construction crew started there, I would have to get permission from them. I was dizzy from the runaround. I too have drive past the park almost every day and wonder what could've been. Sucks.

Alright, go talk to the mother again, see what happens, than if all else fails... Wait until about 2 am, dress in your blackest of clothing, put on those headphones, and get 'r' done! If the guy doesn't know your a neighbor, that's good, if he finds you there again at night, don't tell him your name, and leave.

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

UGH! What a bummer.

I've had problems several different times with conflicting permission and denial scenarios. It always sucks.

I do remember one time finding a barber dime (on public property) and being kicked out right after that--so I feel your pain!!

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

That guy sounds like a real jerk. Good job on the dime though!

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

That totally is a bummer to have to face such a jacka$$ such as the son. I am agreement with the other's in going back and presenting some type of gift to the mother for causing any trouble, even though you didn't. And have a talk about what happened. This should open the door for permission again and ask for it in writing from her.
Just like during deer season when hunting written permission from the property owner for the property you are hunting on. After the hunting season was over with I would always take a small gift to show gratitude for allowing me to hunt the property.

Good Luck and hope you can get back on the property.

youre kidding...............right ::)

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

that sucks. try getting written permission from the mother.

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

Go back and talk to both at the same time ...Bring him some beer cause it sounds like he could use one....DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

I agree ... go back and talk to the mother and get written permission...and WTG on the dime! HH

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

Bergie, unless his name is on the property title, he has no right to treat you that way if the mother says it's OK. Bring her a nice apple pie and talk to her. IMO

Re: Barber dime and jerky guy kicks me out

Go back and present the barber dime to her as a gift, and tell her where you found it. It just might peak her interest enough for her to give permission again and for her to tell her son to butt out. HH

The downside to this is that the Jerky Son may talk her out of it and hunt it himself, being the A$$ that he sounds like. Keep it between the Mother and you as far as permission goes, unless of course he is the landowner.

Good Luck
