Detector(s) used
Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II
Around 12noon there was a knock at the door, I thought it was my cousin but she doesn't knock as loud-opened the door and lo and behold, my Bounty Hunter QDII on the step at the door!! ;D All excited, I waved and said thanks to the UPS guy, brought in my detector. I had to get a few things done in the house (off from work today-talk about good timing), but I quickly put it together and later brought a few things outside and placed them on the ground spread out, scanned over them just to see how it would do. I fooled with the sensitivity and disc knobs a bit while passing over different items, noticed it did beep when at one point I had just held the unit over a certain spot, curious to see how it will pinpoint when something is buried.

I started to dig there, but didn't finish, as the sun was going down fast and the mosquitoes were wanting to join in the fun. :'( I might try that spot again tomorrow, I'll say this is part of learning the machine and what the sounds mean. I'm wondering if the powerline about 40-50(?) feet away would have anything to do with my readings. I wasn't quite ready to pick up and go in, we have a metal culvert under the driveway and the QDII really picked up on it, indicating .25c, .50c and up to $1.00 on the ID guage. I had lost an inexpensive gold earing near that area of the driveway but with that culvert that might be a challenge to try to find, lol.

Besides snooping in my own yard-I really don't think there's much there-perhaps some nails, I'll plant just a few things in a test garden to practice, but I'm wanting to go by the church or the community center behind that (tennis courts, baseball field, swimming pool) and see what happens. My late grandmother's house up front (next door) was built in the '30s might see what's up there also. My cousin lives there now, I think she'll be equally curious. The mosquitoes win out, but I sure wanted to stay out longer. Looking forward to MD'ing, it's not a high end White or other machine but I do like the Bounty Hunter brand and this one's features.

HH to all,
Kerry

Kerry, welcome to the forum. Learning your detector comes with practice. Remember to not use to high a Sensitivity and over lap your sweeps. Keep the coil level with the ground the whole sweep to get the chance of getting a target in the field which is a cone shape.

Good Luck,
Sandman

Congrats on your first machine..........nothing like the feeling of opening 'er up for the first time. Take your time to learn it and the rewards will come. Good luck on your hunts!

Kerry,
Congrats on the new machine, and welcome to TreasureNet. There are some great people on this forum..........some experienced and some beginners...which is a perfect blend! I have learned so much from everybody on this forum.

You asked about the power line interference. I have a White's DFX (yes, it was my first, too ;))....and it goes into a tailspin at certain spots in my backyard because of the electrical interference from the underground power lines. Sandman and others could probably provide you more info on that subject.....just letting you know how mine reacts. First time I hit my backyard, I thought for sure I had hit somebody's money cache......not so.....LOL ;D I did find my TV cable line, which I hastily had to cover up real fast before somebody saw my "find".... :-[

Good luck.........oh.........and don't forget to put your picture in the Mug Shots so that we will know whom we are talking to. 8)
Happy Hunting....HH

Get yourself some Badger Bug Balm.

Best stuff I have tried to keep awat mosquitoes, black flies and deer flies. Works as well as 100% DEET without vaoprizing your eyes and making your sweat melt the plastic on the detector. It smells good, too. Like beeswax & lemon grass.

I spend a lot of time outdoors and this keeps me sane. Pricy, but a little goes a long way and a two oz tin lasts the two of us several years.

Thank you for all the replies, I read all tips and advice-it's all good. I tried it again this morning, just a short time, I do believe I'll get the hang of it, it is fun learning about all this.

I will say, there are principals involved, some of the tips I'd read I have read before, (which is fine with me) meaning there are tried and true techniques, as in what you've mentioned, Sandman. In the little time I've tried my unit, the slow level sweeping does well. I notice I can back off on sensitivity so the machine doesn't get too excited, also turn up the disc knob a little now & then.

I think I will try the Badger Balm, thank you Charlie, deet is okay-not the best, can't stand how it makes me feel-the smell must raise my BP (mine does not run high) or something-sensitive to the odor (probably getting poisoned...).

Our power lines run overhead, and one goes across the yard to the house, I do watch my location, borninok. I'm really looking forward to my first hunt at a location.

I went out this morning and just buried a dime about 5 inches, the machine had no problem ID'ing, I realize this might not mean anything because it was just buried-but I got a good signal. It does give an idea of depth-it usually shows 1-2inches deeper than what might actually be, but like I say, I need to get out and see just what she'll do.

Thanks again for the warm welcome, tips like I say are always welcome. I'll let you know what happens when I finally get to a site to hunt-hopefully I'll have something to take pictures of.
