Had a surprising find at a supposed hunted out site this Sunday.
Let me start out by saying ive been using the XP for a little over a year, and i almost always use ZERO Disc when i hunt. Probably 98% OF THE TIME...
We went riding Sunday afternoon looking for a new permission with no luck.
So we decided to go to a hunted out site that is super trashy, "early 1800's downtown hotel site", where we havent had much luck in a while, but some very nice coins and buttons have been dug here.
I was going slow with the 9" coil running zero discrim. After over an hour of listening to tons of chatter and nothing to show for it, i decided to switch to 4.4 disc just to quiet things down and see if something good peeps through.
I wasnt really expecting much, was kind of frustrated, and about ready to move on to another site when i get a decent sounding repeatable tone amidst the trash around 5 inches down that came in at around 58 while running 8Khz.
I dug the plug and the tone was still there. Had to pick through a little iron in the plug to find the target, but once i found it i was happy and surprised.
I was looking at a nice condition Civil War or Possible Pre-Civil War, maybe 1850's US Artillery cuff button with shank.
Looks like it does have a backmark, but it is under a little crust i havent yet been able to remove.
So..... Im wondering if this was a fluke, i.e. random luck, or should i start trying to use disc a little more often.
Ive often heard disc affects depth, and you will miss targets, but sometimes after hours of constant chatter at trashy sites the noise can get a bit overwhelming.
Just wanted to share my find, my experience, and see what others might say.
HH.

Nice find. I don't use a Deus, I have a AT Pro. But I have found it useful in iron beds to mix up my settings when things are not working. 0 Disc at time, 40 at others. I don't think its a fluke, you mixed it up and it worked for you.

Great Dig. I and someone else hunted this little area no larger than 50x60 and found many buttons even though it was iron infested. One day I stopped by that spot and out of the blue lowered my sensitivity from 90 to 75 and out popped a couple of flat buttons that had a clear sound. Somebody asked me why I didn't just increase the discrimination. I really didn't have an answer except just a whim. But like you I always run 0 discrimination when I can but sometimes you just have to raise it to keep iron chatter from driving you crazier,

Thanks DS..., and thanks for the sensi suggestion. Sometimes i get stuck on some settings and do not change them up much. Sometimes i will drop my Sensi down a little too. Normally i dont mess with the Disc or Sensi much. This was just one of those times where i just felt like trying something different and figured since i wasnt finding anything, a little change wouldnt hurt. It was just strange how not long after i made that change good things happened. Which led me to think maybe i need to try using Disc a little more often, esp when im in super trash, not finding, and iron buzzing is driving me insane.

Beautiful button when I do trashy foundations I use some disc lower my tx power if an area is trashy I think real good depth isn't always good

Sweet button! I've found that I get mentally fatigued in the iron chatter for long periods of time and I get sloppy and careless after a while. I generally do best in the first hour, and if I find some keepers out of the gate, I'm able to last longer listening to constant chatter before I get careless. Adding disc or dropping sens has helped me many times after working an iron patch for hours. That site sounds like a good place to put the Deus to work.

Congrats on the great button. Iron chatter can be tiresome, good job finding a way to change it up. I have a new permission that was hunted hard years ago, and I can't find any coins around the house. The iron is so bad it's almost a continuous hum. I know there has to be good things in there, especially since the detectorists back in the 80's must have had the same problem. I will try lowering sens and increasing disc next time I'm there.

I have 2 older units from a company that is gone now.

They have a preset iron reject that works fantastic for my old sites. I always dig every non ferrous target, no matter how little time I have. I never accept all iron unless searching for that unknown hot spot that should have small iron.

One unit has a preset sensitivity and no visual ID, but you adjust the tone break to know the conductivity "reading".

The other has a single tone only but has visual ID, and adjustable sens.

What I started doing, is using a smaller or bigger coil to be able to run hot as possible, but eliminate most falsing. I think I do better with the single tone unit because there are no "split tones" that my brain may think is a dis'd out iron target. So, the quieter the machine is, I feel I don't miss much on that first sweep...if that makes sense.

It sure looks intimidating to face a big site with a tiny coil, but my good finds went way up.

Thanks Brad. I agree with you on the iron fatigue, especially if you arent finding anything exciting, it definitely can take its toll on you. I have my goto settings i use most times, and alot of times im very hesitant to change up much during a hunt. Guess im going to have to start making more adjustments as needed.

Thanks J.C. Im looking forward to hearing about how these adjustments will work for you at your site you mentioned.

Congrats on the arty button bud- I starting creeping in a bit of discrim on the Deus as well. With all that noise running full open, you miss quite a few of those whisper signals.

That's why machines have adjustments. Like you I tend to run wide open 98% of the time, but the other 2% I adjust what needs to be, again like you to keep from going insane.

Nice button. I love artillery, and Navy buttons. (earlier ones anyway)

Awesome button !!! With my DEUS I run Disc at no more than 5 and on anther program disc at 5 notch 0-30 , I believe notch does not affect depth, just the audio signals. DEUS owners correct me if I'm wrong. I also use ID NORM , so all frequencies have same target ID numbers. Not saying my way is best, it just how I use mine. I find target ID numbers are not very accurate all the time on beach or deep targets. I go by sound on beach and difficult ground conditions.

Congrats and HH

nice buttons ! I saw the same looking buttons on a confederate uniform on civil war 360. I found 2 like it this year myself and my buddy said they were pre civil war but then I found a S,C and N.C sunburst in the same field the confederates were using what they could get. I run my machine open too with no discrim but when im the thick iron my sen is 86 and tx is on 1 helps the audio calm down a little. When I looked at yours again I noticed its a two piece the ones I found were one piece. dont know how much of a difference that makes.
