Hello Forum,

I found this button at a well on an old farm located in Walworth, NY. The back is all rotted away, but the front looks pretty good. Can anyone identify with certainty anything about it? Thanks for looking.

My inclination is that it's more modern, especially if you say the back is rotted away. A picture of the reverse might help.

Thanks vpnavy and grasshopper,

I might not ever really know the date without the back to verify backmarks. What I can say though is the family farm dates back to the 1800’s. The well that it was found near is made of stone. I am trying to confirm through genealogy of the family who and when they served in the navy. If you search US Navy Civil war coat button images like my button come up. The back has what looks like horse hair inside (a fiberus material). I took a better picture of it, and placed it in a wooden box. I am giving it back to the landowner.

Thanks for looking.

Hello Hbot37,

Thanks for your reply. WW1 is still fairly old, and an interesting piece of history.

Nice Button !
